Supreme Courthouse Tasmanian Single Malt Whisky (Peated)
Description
The Court House is the third stop in our Heritage Series which offers a tour throughout Oatlands’ most iconic buildings, weaving a tale of dark but deeply colourful history. Like their namesakes, each cask-matured whisky in this series is complex, intriguing, and essentially flavoured by time.
Preserved in striking originality, the Oatlands Supreme Court House stands as a pivotal monument of history, unquestionably Oatlands' most notable heritage edifice. Carved from enduring sandstone, its venerable walls whisper tales of bygone eras, echoing the complex interplay of justice and incarceration. From as early as 1825, Oatlands had become a fortified outpost, bolstered by a military presence by 1827 and emerging as one of seven police districts in Van Diemen's Land.
In the winter of 1829, convict stonemason John Mackintosh, sentenced to Oatlands' chain gang for misconduct, was tasked with constructing this emblem of justice. Aided by George Wood, a notorious highwayman, they diligently erected this landmark against the idyllic backdrop of Lake Frederick whilst simultaneously being weighed down by their mandatory irons. In 1841, the court house gained supreme stature, thus reinforcing Oatlands as the interior capital, with Hobart and Launceston being the only other places holding this prestigious legal standing.
It's this same court house, built by tarnished hands, which has emerged as one of Tasmania's most consequential buildings and is thus commemorated by this limited edition whisky.
