Former State School Tasmanian Single Malt Whisky
Description
The Former State School is the sixth stop in our Heritage Series, which offers a tour throughout Oatlands’ most iconic buildings, weaving a tale of dark but deeply colourful history. Like their namesakes, each cask-matured whisky in this series is complex, intriguing, and essentially flavoured by time.
Built in 1886, the single-storey sandstone former state school still stands as a testament to Oatlands' Victorian-era architecture. Accentuated by an impressive entrance archway, the building's prominent gables and trios of windows etch a striking silhouette against the Tasmanian skyline.
The school, perched atop a gentle incline, stands on the former site of the 1827 soldiers' barracks and subsequent probation station. Opened in March 1886, it initially incorporated living quarters for the headmaster, and if you look closely, you can still see the outline of the windows which remain etched into the façade.
Lying at the rear of the school grounds, the last remnants of the Oatlands probation station still stand, silent witnesses to the antics of the notorious 100-strong convict gang of the 1840s who left an indelible mark on Oatlands' history.
This intriguing tale of education and rebellion intertwines seamlessly with the character of our limited edition whisky.
